Kumite and Ground work Course

Course held at Hedge End Dojo on Sunday 16th March hosted by Sensei Nick Burr 5th Dan IOGKF

What do you do if taken to the floor by an opponant or attacker. For most karate students floor fighting is not something regulary practiced. This course hosted by Sensei Nick Burr focused on what to do when taken to the ground. If you can fight on your feet for 5 minutes you may last 2 minutes on the floor if against an apponant of equal ability. Breakfulls are equally important, how to fall if thrown or pushed forwards backwards sideways. How to put on leg and arm locks and how to escape were also taught be Sensei Nick. Kumite techniques and throws were part of the second half of the afternoon. This was followed by kumite, then trying to force your partner to the floor ,then floor work randori, then sanchin kata THEN CHANGE PARTNERS AND DO IT ALL AGAIN !.

Our thanks to Sensei Nick for a superb afternoon, many students commenting on Sensei's ability, attention to detail and how he gets the teaching across to the students.

Definitely one of the best Goju-Ryu karate instructors in the country.

Sensei Nick Burr Adult Class

The junior students also had a great time learning breakfalls , scarf holds and floor fighting techniques.

Junior students battle it out, realising how much energy floor fighting takes.

I.O.G.K.F. Chief Instructors Gasshuku

OKINAWA

Sensei Alan joined the senior instructors of the EGKA for 10 days of intensive training under Master Higaonna . This was a truly unforgetable experience.

Training took place at the Okinawa Prefecture Budokan ( centre for martial arts) in Naha Okinawa Japan from 2nd - 9th November 2006.

Master Higaonna although 68 years old was amazing the power and agility of this man has to be seen to be believed.

Training consisted of kata and applications of kata for the duration of the course, and lots of sanchin training. Each day a single kata was concentrated on and both basic and alternative applications were shown for each.

There were senior instuctors from all over the world training and when it came to partner someone for you were almost guaranteed to get a partner of 5th dan or above with a wealth of knowledge to show you. Another thing I noticed was the hard work and dedication of the senior grades. Its far too easy to look at a 5th or 6th dan and think they've done it now they have reached the top and can sit back and relax. They train harder than ever so they can pass their knowledge down to us.

It was also a great honour to meet Miyagi Anichi 10th Dan and Aragaki Shuichi 10th Dan who were both students of Miyagi Chojun Sensei who both gave lectures and demonstrations.
